Jeff Nolte was arrested at his apartment last month in Madison.
He is accused of raping a child in Canton.
If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.
Neighbors are in disbelief.
"I think it's really messed up. I can't believe it's happening around Madison, South Dakota. I always hear of teachers being accused of rape and such in a bigger city, different states, but not in here." Said Nolte's former neighbor DK Lee.
The Oldham-Ramona math teacher and golf coach has been suspended with pay since his arrest.
He voluntarily moved out of his Madison apartment last month.
Lee said Nolte's profession makes the accusations even worse, "Just the fact that teachers are always around children and it is their job to educate children and protect them from this kind of abuse rather than inflicting this kind of abuse on children themselves."
Lee does not have any children right now, but is already planning ahead for when he does.
"The first thing I do before I move into a new neighborhood is look into the website and see if there any sex offenders around my neighborhood. And then I would educate my children as to what the protocol is, how to react to certain situations and such." He said.
The school board will decide on Nolte's future employment after his arraignment.
But since this is a personnel matter, its being handled privately for now.
