Retired Pipestone firefighter turns 100, active for a day

Posted: Updated:

In Pipestone, Saturday, friends and family of a retired firefighter held a big celebration. It wasn't just because Harold Huemoller is now 100 years old but, for one day and one day only, he became the oldest active firefighter in Minnesota.

If you ask anyone at the Pipestone Country club, Harold Huemoller is quite a guy. 100 years old and sharp as a whistle. He appreciates a good American brew while others appreciate him.

For 28 years, Harold served with the Pipestone Fire Department.

"It's one of the best organizations in Pipestone, probably in Minnesota," Harold said. "I loved that fire department. We had some hardships, but we had some good ones too."

He received his official retirement ax, Saturday, made locally out of Pipestone quarry. Firefighters also had an idea: to make Harold the honorary oldest active duty firefighter for a day.

"It means a lot, I'll tell you. I really honor those people," Harold said.

While time and technology have advanced, Harold's time with the department is never forgotten. The Pipestone Fire Hall even has his old truck, "The Buffalo", still on display.

"The time is going to get less and less as generations go on. Guys and gals won't put on 20 or 30 years like they used to. That's huge to put on that many years," Pipestone Fire Chief Corey Popma said.

And those years were very cherished as Harold means the world to those firefighters and those firefighters mean the world to him.

"I'll remember it for as long as I live, which may not be very long but who knows. I'll remember 'em," he said.
