Group pushing backyard chickens in Rapid City

Posted: Updated:

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A group of backyard chicken advocates is gearing up for a second run at legalizing the birds inside Rapid City limits.

Rapid City Hens spokeswoman Brooke Romeo says the group will be presenting a new draft ordinance to the Rapid City Council, after an unsuccessful attempt last summer. She tells the Rapid City Journal the group has been drumming up support.

The proposal last summer would have allowed city residents up to six hens but no roosters in a backyard coop. The City Council took no formal action but instead directed the Rapid City Hens to start a public-education campaign.

Member Stephanie Weyer says the group has begun working with the nonprofit Black Hills Poultry Society and Dakota Rural Action, as well as the city's Standing Committee on Sustainability.
