Depp seriously considering Wounded Knee purchase

Posted: Updated:

Will Johnny Depp buy Wounded Knee and give it to the Oglala Sioux Tribe?

For the past year, the future of the piece of land on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation where hundreds of women, children and elders were slaughtered by the U.S. military in 1890 has been in question.

Oglala Sioux Tribal President Bryan Brewer tells KSFY News the man who owns the land bought it for $1,000. Now he's trying to sell it to developers for millions.

When actor Johnny Depp heard about this, he told a London newspaper that he wanted to buy it.

The actor's proxy to the Oglala Sioux is the chairman of the Comanche Nation, of which Depp is an adopted member. They say Depp is planning a trip to South Dakota to see Wounded Knee for himself.

"Johnny Depp did - it was confirmed he did make that statement. And he's hoping to even be here this month. He's serious about it," said Brewer.

When Depp is coming has yet to be decided, but members of the Tribal government say it will be kept private. They don't want the presence of fans or media to sour a potential deal.

It is starting to warm up and spring has finally arrived, but with that, comes severe weather. This morning the tornado sirens were tested, but many in the Sioux Falls area did not hear them. The Emergency Manager for Sioux Falls said it was a communication problem. And other than that they are not exactly sure why it happened. We all know what the tornado siren means - potentially dangerous weather approaching. On Wednesday South Dakota had a state-wide test for when the storms roll through....More >>
