Church consolidations possible in northeast South Dakota

Posted: Updated:

The doors aren't closed yet, but members think it is only a matter of time. Holy Trinity in Hosmer is one of the churches that may be forced to merge.

Holy Trinity, along with Saint Thomas the Apostle in Roscoe would be merged with St. Anthony of Padua in Hoven. Right now there is no certainty of what that means, but Holy Trinity member Timothy Haegele isn't optomistic his church is going to survive.

"Churches are being linked and churches are being merged. The ones that are being merged,  there's not going to be any services there at all," Haegele said.

Nothing is finalized yet, and the Bishop of Sioux Falls Diocese, Paul Swain, is the one who makes the final call. Mass could be rotated among these churches, or it could be completely eliminated from some.

"There's not much choice anymore. There just aren't enough priests. I mean, I've had bitter feelings about it and everything else, but when it comes right down to it, I wouldn't want to be the Bishop to make these decisions," Haegele said.

Congregational feedback will be a huge factor in the Bishop making his final decision. This will hopefully all be settled within the next month.
