Luverne hockey looking for first trip to state

Posted: Updated:

The Luverne Cardinals have done something no other high school hockey team in Minnesota has done this season, gone unbeaten.  Luverne is 24-0-1 heading into the post season.

"We're the only unbeaten in Minnesota.  That's something that's never been done here before, it's been a great season so far."  says head coach Derrick Brown.

"We knew it was going to be a special season, and some of our underclassmen have played like upper classmen, and that's been big for us." says senior Logan Norman.

For this veteran group though they've known heartache.  These seniors lost in the section final as sophmores.  Last yea, they were upset as the top seed in the sectionals.

"They know going into the playoffs, you can't overlook anyone.  We've learned from it, and it will help us going into the post season." says Brown.

"It was a disappointing end to our season last year, now we'll get another chance." says Norman.

Three more wins and Luverne would qualify for the school's first ever state hockey tournament, one of the biggest events every year in Minnesota high school sports.

"It would be huge for our program, for the city, our younger kids programs have been good and it would be great for them to see that." says Brown.

"To go to the state tournament was be great for us, for our seniors legacy that we could pass on to the under classmen too." says Norman.
