South Dakota Sen. John Thune spoke to students from 4 different high schools today at Groton High School. The Groton government class put on the event that they called "The Next Generation Crackerbarrel."
Sen. John Thune was they keynote speaker. He spoke about character, leadership, and commitment to excellence. He then allowed students to ask questions.
Some hot topics were social security, minimum wage, common core, healthcare and legalization of marijuana. Thune expressed his views on these topics, and then students discussed them amongst each other.
Redfield senior Chloe Edgar was concerned about states legalizing marijuana when the federal government doesn't support it. Sen. Thune explained that the federal government has decided to ignore the law in these states because of ballots that were presented. He then went on to express how he feels about legalizing marijuana.
"This is the point I tried to make, I think on issued like that I just don't know how it ends well. I don't see any constructive outcome that comes from what some of these states are doing," he said.
