Exploring culture and health through dance

Posted: Updated:

Dance is a great way to burn some calories and get the heart rate going and yes, even the most uncoordinated gym-goer can find some fun in their fitness.  The global non-profit "Up With People" is probably best known for performing shows for children. But group members Wen Fei Wang and Lauren Baker had a much different crowd Wednesday morning, as the two took over a Zumba class at Avera McKennan Fitness.

"We're going to start with a warm-up and they like to do the 'Waka Waka' since that's a lot of fun, we will teach a fishing dance from Japan, then we have a dance from India called 'Jai Ho' and it's a lot of fun and if we have time we'll end with the 'Gum-boot' dance which is from Africa." Said Baker.

The international beats provide some extra culture to the more traditional workout without sacrificing any of the fitness.

"They can be physically demanding or they can be easy it's just a great way to stay in shape and healthy and learn a lot about different cultures and different countries." Said Baker.

There was still plenty of hip-shaking and fast-paced rhythms as this group learned a few new moves all while staying fit and having fun.

"Definitely, yes it's totally fun, it's really a lot of fun to do and it's a dance for all ages and every dance because it's from different countries all comes with the story and a background so we hope that we can also share that with everybody here." Said Wang.

The big 'Up With People' show is just around the corner on Sunday, March 9th and tickets are going fast. There is a 2pm matinee and 6pm evening show, tickets are available at all Sioux Falls Hy-Vee stores.
