What's better than finding 20 bucks in a coat you rarely use? Finding potentially more than that, by checking a website, which you can easily do at home. KSFY News went to different places around Sioux Falls to see if people had any money in unclaimed property. Only about half the people we talked to were familiar with the process. But quite a few of those people had some luck.
The amount ranged from about $30 to a couple hundred bucks. They all agreed it was an easy process and getting the money took about a month. We talked to Glen Holsather who said his brother did not find money for himself on the site, but he did find some with Glen's name on it.
"I had overpaid on a cell phone because I canceled one cell phone and I paid again thinking I hadn't paid. So then quite a few years had gone by, and like I said, my brother went on and he was looking and he typed my name in and found the $500. I liked it! It was nice! I took him out for lunch!" Glen said.
Glen said it took about five weeks to get his money. He still checks for his name periodically and tells everyone to check the website because it was the easiest money he has ever gotten. The best part is there are no fees involved in getting your money. And if you get tripped up during the process, you can call the treasury department and they'll walk you through.
