Mitchell woman giving kidney to husband

Posted: Updated:

This truly is a love story for the books.

Terry and Gwenda Koch have been there for each other through thick and thin. Now, Gwenda is about to give her husband a gift no money can buy.

They were high school sweethearts and have been married for 45 years. Terry and Gwenda have three children and eight grandchildren.

Their love truly has stood the test of time.

"We met at a basketball game. I went to this ball game with a friend of mine and saw her clear across the gym -- it's one of those deals. She had a yellow sweater on so she stuck out pretty good," said Terry.

But it was this past August, on the Koch's 45th wedding anniversary, that Terry went into kidney failure. After tests, Terry found out he was eligible to be a kidney transplant recipient.

That's when his wife Gwenda found out she was a match.

"For me, it was like why wouldn't I? I've got all this time invested in him already, I may as well get him to hang around," said Gwenda.

"I didn't really want to see it happen that way because it was her and I've become ready to accept it basically because I need a kidney and she wants to give it to me. So its special," said Terry.

"We've been through some ups and downs but far, far more good ones. And I hate getting emotional because if he had some other disease, there wouldn't be a thing I could do about it. This particular one, I can and I love that," said Gwenda.

It's a gift that not many spouses are able to give -- but for Gwenda Koch, there's nothing more gratifying than giving part of herself to save the love of her life.

The kidney transplant surgery was originally scheduled for Wednesday morning but it has been postponed because a few more tests need to be run.
