Mitchell Police are investigating a body found in a parking lot near the Corn Palace Thursday morning.

Police said by the time they got to the parking lot just before 8 Thursday morning, the man was already dead.

Neighbors said while they are surprised this happened, they are trying not to be worried until the investigation is complete.

"Normally, a really safe area and you just don't see this very often." Said Jaylen Uthe who goes to college in Mitchell.

He said he was shocked when he heard a 58-year-old man from Mitchell was found dead Thursday morning, "It normally doesn't happen more than anything. It's definitely a rare occasion to find somebody deceased in a parking lot to say the least."

He added he is relieved to hear police say the public is not in danger.

But police are still trying to find out how the man died.

"Of course, with any death investigation, the number one thing we want to do, is disprove homicide or show indication that it could be homicide. And then we go from there, ruling out different things." Said Det. Lt. Don Everson.

They sent the man's body to the Minnehaha Coroner's Office

"There were no obvious signs of why this person died, so that the death investigation started an autopsy was conducted this afternoon." He said.

Det. Lt. Don Everson said there are no signs of foul play, but this death is still being investigated.
