State Theater nearing finish line

Posted: Updated:

The stunning picture captured in black and white shows a vibrant Phillips Avenue. The State Theater stoically stands on the right, its marquee proclaiming you can see "Botany Bay" in color.

Fast forward 60 years. Soon, we'll see the rebirth of the State Theater.

"To finish the city. This iconic building, this will be a great fixture to anchor north Phillips as people come into our great downtown," said Starmark President and State supporter John Swedeen.

Getting the State Theater to its current condition hasn't been easy.

"It's been tough. It's been tough for people to open their wallets and hearts to enterprises like this, but we're at the finish line now. We're going to open this place up. But, what I want to do, what we want to do is that we do it right. That when we do open the doors of this iconic venue it's going to look how it's supposed to look like it did in the 1920s," said Swedeen.

Restoration work this precise comes at a price. More than $2.5 million has been invested in the State thus far.

"The economic income cannot be overestimated. Our conservative studies show an additional 60,000-70,000 people will come to downtown Sioux Falls each year, and they're going to spend a million bucks," said Swedeen. "If I'm a small business owner or a Sioux Falls guy or gal with stake in this place that's going to get my attention."

The State has clearly grabbed Swedeen's attention. As the State makes a final push toward opening its doors, he hopes more people in Sioux Falls get in line.

"As I've looked across the country and there are hundreds of towns and small cities in our country that have reopened their states. That have reopened their iconic art film houses and are operating profitably," said Swedeen. "The question I would ask is why not us? Why not Sioux Falls?"

This Sunday, KSFY is partnering with the State to host the Stars, Statues, and the State party at the Icon Lounge. If you're interested in attending click on this link: http://www.siouxfallsstatetheatre.org/StarsStatuesState.aspx
