Fire crews train for wildland fires

Posted: Updated:

It may be cold and snowy, Saturday, but the day served as crucial learning time for eastern South Dakota firefighters to prepare for wildfires.

Out in Tea, more than 60 firefighters and instructors gathered for an eastern South Dakota Wildland Training Academy. It's a chance to learn about leadership, fire investigation, water and hose usage among others.

"They know it's going to keep them alive and this is the training that helps them recognize bad situations and will keep them alive if they get into a bad situation," Coyote 1 Wildland Association Treasurer Pete Bolzer said.

Firefighters say the outlook for this coming summer is hot and dry which could mean a potentially dangerous season for those wildland crews.
