SD panel OKs bill to address growing meth problem

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota law enforcement might soon have a new tool to fight the production of methamphetamine.

The illegal stimulant has been a growing problem in the state as producers learn easier ways to manufacture it.

The House Health and Human Services Committee on Tuesday voted unanimously to support a measure to keep electronic records of the buyers of certain cold medicines. Active ingredients in some over-the-counter cold medicines are used to make meth.

South Dakota would be the 30th state to join the electronic registry. The bill was brought by the state attorney general.

There already is a limit to the amount of cold medicine a person can buy. The electronic database would alert vendors when to stop a sale because the customer already reached his or her monthly quota.
