County adopts voting centers, eliminates precincts

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Commissioners in a central South Dakota county have voted to eliminate the area's 15 precincts and replace them with seven voting centers.

KCCR in Pierre reports the change means that those who are registered to vote in that area will be able to vote anywhere in the county, not just at a specific precinct.

The change will go into effect during the primary election in June.

Residents will be asked to present their driver's license when voting. The station reports that this will prevent people from voting more than once. Officials say those who don't show a driver's license will be asked to sign an affidavit.

Three of the centers will be in churches. Officials say the change will cut the number of volunteers needed during the election.
