Brandon Volunteer Fire Department funds cut

Posted: Updated:

Township leaders have cut funding to the Brandon Volunteer Fire Department by $4,000, significantly slashing its budget.

We spoke to the Brandon Fire Chief about what the cuts would mean to his department. He says they will need to depend on surrounding fire departments.

Valley Springs Volunteer Fire Department's Chief Donald Johnson says he understands the frustration coming from the Brandon Fire Chief.

"It takes a lot of money to run this and you hope you never use it. You spend a million dollars and hope you never take it out of the shed but unfortunately we do," said Chief Johnson.

Chief Johnson says he doesn't think this will affect his department much -- maybe another dozen or so calls a year.

"We've always had automatic mutual aid so if there's been a fire anywhere in that territory, it's either us or Garretson or Renner's always coming to those fires anyhow," said Chief Johnson.

Renner Fire Chief Mike Schmitz says his department will not prepare for anything different. It will be business as usual.

"It's a brotherhood. If they need help, we're there. And if we need help, they'll come help us," said Chief Schmitz.

People living in rural Minnehaha County shouldn't worry that they're too far away if there should be a fire.

"We can have a truck rolling in a matter of minutes. We're usually en route, so response time is good and I don't care how far we have to go.  If they have a fire, we're going to go -- period," said Chief Johnson.
