Book written by ex-Hutterites now available in South Dakota

Nine young authors from North Dakota and Canada are now sharing their story with South Dakotans. They call themselves "the Nine,"and they are ex-Hutterites. They wrote "Hutterites – Our Story to Freedom."

The Nine left their Hutterite colonies to follow Jesus Christ. They decided to write a book about their story in hopes of enlightening others in similar situations.

"We decided to write a book because we received help when we left. We found freedom. We found help in Jesus Christ,"co-author Jason Waldner said.

Jason said when he attended church at the colony it was nothing like when he goes now.

"Everybody files into this church building, and it's men on one side women on the other. The preacher just stands up and reads a sermon that is four-hundred-years old, and it's in High German which Hutterite's don't understand very well," Waldner said.

In the book they describe many other stories about being on the colony. The book has received very good reviews, but there have been a few people disgruntled with the book.

A 26-year-old woman who was from the same colony as three of the authors wrote a 3 page review on the book.

"While the book may contain some truth, it is also filled with straight-faced lies, omissions and inaccurate information about the Hutterites," she said.

Co-author, Junia Waldner, said there were no lies in the book.

"The stories we wrote in the book, I don't know of any that were so outrageous they wouldn't happen in other colonies," Junia said.

However, she is aware that her book may upset Hutterites.

"It's understandable that Hutterites would be against it, it's the only life they know. They have no money to leave. Where would they go? It's understandable," she said.

The book is available in several book stores across the state including Barnes and Noble in Sioux Falls, and Anchors of Faith in Aberdeen.
