With the start of the Summit League tournament just days away, Commissioner Tom Douple was in Sioux Falls today, talking about the strength of the Summit League and the competition level they have seen this year.
"It is the highest rank we've ever been in men's basketball as an RPI in the history of the league. One poll has us 14 the other has us 17 I mean it is very good Division One basketball. On the women's side we are ranked 16th in the Sagarin. It's great women's basketball." said Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple.
This will be the sixth year the Summit League tournament has been held at the Sioux Falls Arena, next year it will move next door to the Denny Sanford Premiere Center.
"It's exciting because we get to go into a new arena and add some new amenities to our fans, create a fanfest. Create some things that we want to grow with the tournament." said Douple
"The reflection of the old arena, we don't have enough time for today or tomorrow to reflect on them, but I will be glad when we don't have to worry about the scoreboard horns going off or things like that." said Sioux Falls Arena General Manager Terry Torkildson.
This tournament has provided a lot of memories, the SDSU Men have won the last two years, while the women have won all five of the championships so far including last year's championship victory over in-state rival USD.
"Last year we were ranked sixth in the country in women's attendance, six out of 31 conferences that is huge. 12th in the men's, it's very well attended." said Douple.
With attendance records breaking every year, the move to the Premiere Center, only makes sense for the Summit League.
