SD Senate approves texting ban

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota Senate has approved a statewide ban on texting while driving after approving changes that some senators say will never be accepted by the House of Representatives.

Senators voted 22-13 to pass a texting ban measure that has already been passed by the House. But senators first changed the measure to impose a higher fine and give law officers more authority to stop drivers for texting while driving.

The measure now returns to the House for consideration of the changes made by the House, but some senators say the measure may die because the House will never accept the changes approved by the Senate.

The version approved by the Senate would allow fines up to $500, while the House version would impose a fine of only $25.
