SD lawmakers looking at revenue projections

Posted: Updated:

The South Dakota Legislature's budget-writing committee is deciding how much money the state will have to spend in the budget year that begins July 1.
State economists have predicted that tax collections won't bring in as much money as was projected when Gov. Dennis Daugaard proposed his state budget in December.
The governor's budget office predicts that ongoing general revenue for the current year will be about $8.4 million below earlier projections for the current year and about $6 million lower than expected for the next budget year. The Legislature's budget staff expects revenue will fall short of earlier projections by about $6 million this year and $4 million next year.
The Legislature's Joint Appropriations Committee will use the revenue estimates to put together a state budget.
