Aberdeen workers venting petroleum odor

Posted: Updated:

ABDERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - A buildup of a petroleum odor has city workers in Aberdeen venting sewer lines.

Officials have been trying to determine the odor's origin since December. The American News reports that Assistant City Engineer Stu Nelson says contaminated soil might be a cause.

City workers are using a blower to vent the smell to prevent it from entering homes.

Nelson says a high concentration of the odor can be flammable, but the current levels are far from that.
