SD legislator, Lottery seek gambling study

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota Lottery plans to request a study of the financial and social effects of gambling in the state after the issue came up in various debates this session.

Republican Rep. Scott Craig of Rapid City hopes for a legislative summer study on gambling in the state. He says the study should be conducted by unbiased people.

The Legislature has killed two bills to enhance video lottery in the state and a third to wean the state off those revenues.

Opponents of gambling enhancements often cite problems with addicts and their families. Supporters say gaming provides important state revenue.

The Legislature is still brainstorming ideas for summer studies. The Executive Director of the Lottery will ask the Lottery Commission to study the issue when they meet in April.
