Women's Coyotes make history

Posted: Updated:

A historic day for the University of South Dakota.

The women's basketball team beat Denver 82-71.

Sending them to theNCAA Tournament.

But what will this do for the university?

The University's President and Assistant Coach both say today's win will push the school forward and get them even more recognition.

Especially because they have only been tournament eligible for two years.

It's an exciting day to be a Coyote.

"It's a great day for USD. I'm so happy for the team, so pleased for Coach Williams. It's just great," said USD President, Jim Abbott.

"Very excited. A dream come true. I mean being a champion. I've never won a championship, but all the credit goes to our girls playing hard and just working. Just been battling adversity all year and just seeing our kids come out on top is a great pleasure," said Assistant Coach Chuck Love.

This big of a win, would put any school on the map, but for the Coyotes, going to the "Big Dance" will do more than just that.

"But this is a step up for us a step up for our University and our team in terms of division 1 sports. It's a great day and been a long time coming," said Abbott.

Abbott added this win will be great for the school.

More people will apply and more people will be looking at their programs.

"I'm feeling really good about our program. I'm feeling really good about USD and I'm feeling really good about today and looking forward to the next chapter in I guess a week from this next Saturday," he said.

But it is not only about the people who don't know about the school.

"I think it will keep our fans interested. Nothing succeeds like success. Transition is tough and the first couple years after transition are tough," Abbott said.

Assistant Coach Chuck Love agrees.

The school will only benefit in the future.

"This program has been successful in the past and we came in and inherited a pretty good group last year and going into this year as well," Love said.

Abbott said applicants went up when the U beat Minnesota in football..

He is assuming the same will happen after this.
