NDSU celebrating 2nd trip to NCAA tournament

Posted: Updated:

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - North Dakota State head coach Saul Phillips was set to enjoy his "big ESPN moment" when the final buzzer sounded ensuring NDSU's second trip to the NCAA tournament.

Phillips was about to hug his wife when he noticed their 10-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son darting in yellow-and-green overalls toward the midcourt mayhem. He says he wasn't about to start ripping fans away from the celebration and had to trust that "the gentle fans of North Dakota State would take mercy on their souls."

The kids were fine, and the Bison faithful and players got to celebrate a last-minute 60-57 win over Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne for the Summit League title.

Phillips says it's nice to see his players' hard work rewarded.

The team will learn its next opponent on Sunday.
