SD Senate OKs bill to open high school group

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The group that governs South Dakota high school sports and other activities will likely have to follow the state's open government policies.

With a 34-1 vote, senators granted final legislative approval to the measure. It already passed the House and the Senate once before.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard will review the bill next.

It would require that the South Dakota High School Activities Association open meetings and records to the public. The group would also have to report annually to a legislative committee.

The association would still be allowed to enter into private, executive session to deal with confidential issues such as student eligibility.

Earlier this year the group passed internal polices to become more transparent.

If approved by the governor, the provision would take effect in July.
