Tonight's Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week is Heaven Zevenbergen, a senior at Elk Point-Jefferson High School.
Heaven is a member of the National Honor Society and is also on the student council. She also has an impressive 4.0 grade point average and focuses not only on her school work...but she also works to help others.
Heaven Zevenbergen's class schedule this semester is busy and tough; she's got Honors English 4 this time around and is also spending part of her class day as a teachers assistant working with 6th and 7th graders. "I walk around, make sure they're getting their assignments. I give spelling tests every week to the 6th and 7th grade classes so I kinda just get a feel of what it's like to be teaching I guess." Given that classroom experience, you may think Heaven's future lies in teaching. Well think again. You see, Heaven is also a singer and she loves working with music, audio and sound. It's something she does at church and that is where her passion lies. Next year, she will be attending classes at Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City. "I'm going to major in audio engineering and entrepreneuring concepts. So two majors. I'm hoping to get done with those in about two years and then moving on to another school, I'm not sure which one but an audio engineering school."
But whether it's her class work, her assistant teaching or her work with audio, the common thread through all three is that she is really engaged in her work and with others. Lori Hawley is Heaven's English teacher. "She works great with people. She is an excellent thinker. I can give her a story to read and she can find things in that story that a lot of people can't. She is a deep thinker and she is an outside of the box thinker so it's fun to have her in the class."
As for the future, Heaven's big dream is to be an audio engineer for a recording artist. She says while they entertain, she will be happily working behind the scenes to make sure they sound great!
For being named our Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week, Heaven will receive a $100 scholarship from the City of Elk Point Electric, which is a Touchstone Energy cooperative.
