UPDATE: Standoff suspect in court

Posted: Updated:

Last night's south Dell Rapid's standoff suspect, Tahlen Bourassa was in court Thursday.

He has new charges of reckless driving and obstructing officers and his bail is set at $1,000.

Police said the amount of resources they used for this standoff was unusual for Bourassa's warrants, but they wanted to make sure no one was hurt.

Police said Tahlen Bourassa has two minor felony warrants, but it ended in a nearly four hour stand off.

"If it was somebody wanted for felony ingesting and grand theft the resources would not have been put to that extent, now when somebody makes statements that they're suicidal and they have a shot gun, and they won't be taken alive, now that brings harm to the public, to other police officers," said Sgt. Jason Gearmen.

Because of this, Sgt. Gearman said four agencies assisted in getting Bourassa into custody.

Adding to the uncertain situation they heard he was high on meth.

"Somebody in that frame of mind, if they're paranoid, meth tends to make people paranoid if they're on it enough, we don't want them hurting someone else or purposely or accidentally or some random security guard coming across to him and him thinking it's a cop you never know what's going to happen," he said.

Even though Bourassa is in police custody, they are still searching for the sawed off shotgun police believe he had.

"If anybody knows the whereabouts of this thing, we believe he was in Sioux Falls for a while he may have stopped at a friends house. Turn that thing in. Get it back to us. Get it off the streets. Because it's not something that we want out there or that the public wants out there we just need it back and get rid of it," he added.

This is not Bourassa's first run in with the law.

It dates back to 2009.

Last year he was charged with DUI and possession of marijuana among other things.
