Sioux Falls police investigating first homicide in 2014

Posted: Updated:

Sioux Falls police are investigating a homicide in central Sioux Falls -- the first for the city in 2014.

Police responded to a medical emergency at 709 South Garfield Avenue around 5 p.m. Sunday.

Kari Ann Kirkegaard, 56, was found dead inside the home, where she lived alone.

No immediate cause of death was found, but after an autopsy this morning, police determine her death was consistent with homicide.

Kirkegaard's bedding was missing. Police are asking people to check their garbage containers for anything out of the ordinary. If anything unusual is found, please call 911.

If anyone had contact with Kari Kirkegaard in the past week, they're asked to call police as well.
