Brackets pause productivity in workplace

Gregory Graham works at Dunham's Sports in Aberdeen. "I wish it was just March Madness all the time instead of the regular season," he said. People from all walks of life agree. A recent survey said as many as 50 million people participate in some sort of March Madness pool.

There's often a pause in workplace productivity during this time of year. In fact, an outplacement firm in Chicago calculated that businesses lose at least $1.2 billion for every unproductive work hour in the first week of the tournament.

"That doesn't surprise me, everybody you talk to is filling out a bracket or can't wait until the games on Thursday, so it doesn't surprise me. I think it's something you have to account for because everyone is going to be doing it," said NSU assistant men's basketball coach John Ritzdorf.

Games tip off Tuesday, and many people have more than one pool. Summit League champion No.12 NDSU will take on No. 5 Oklahoma on Thursday in Spokane, Wash.
