South Dakota has the third lowest unemployment rate in the United States. That was evident today at the Aberdeen area career fair.
"The place is just bustling with people looking to find the right position today," Absolutely Aberdeen executive director Julie Johnson said.
The job fair filled the Aberdeen civic arena floor. Over 50 employers were at the event. These are the highest numbers the fair has ever seen. Many people were eager and hopeful for the new job opportunities.
"I just received my GED, and I'm out looking for a job," job seeker Kassie Ringsaker said.
"I just moved here, so I'm just trying to find a job. I just moved up here about a week ago," Shalene Ball said.
Aberdeen has around 1,000 job openings right now, and the city is constantly seeing more businesses opening up.
Lamont Companies is currently building a strip mall in Aberdeen called Shoppes on 7th. "There's about 12 spaces for retail in the existing two buildings right now," CEO Jeff Lamont said.
It will house several new businesses including a nail salon, hair salon, mainstream boutique, Jimmy John's and a drive through Starbucks.
"Aberdeen's having a very exciting growth spurt right now. There is continuing growth in the financial services sector, healthcare, manufacturing, construction and retail services. Just a lot of job creation and wealth creation going on," Johnson said.
All this opportunity keeps job seekers optimistic.
"People have approached me. Everyone is friendly. I've gotten a good vibe, so I think I'll do well," Ball said.
