Crews still on-scene after Howard grain elevator fire

Posted: Updated:

Volunteer firefighters in Howard, Canova and Fedora had their hands full, Thursday night into Friday morning, after a fire at the Howard Famer's Co-Op.

Crews on-scene tell KSFY the original wooden grain elevator caught fire and they're still trying to figure out why and how. The Miner County Emergency Manager said it started in the older portion of the structure, Thursday. A passerby called in the fire about 9:00 p.m. when they saw smoke and flames coming from the property.

All that's left Friday morning is a pile of smoldering rubble. A few volunteer firefighters will be on scene to check for hot spots. They hope to start using an excavator to remove what's left of the elevator.

A neighboring steel grain mill suffered some moderate damage.

Howard Firefighters say nobody was injured in the fire.
