Downtown Sioux Falls landmark Sid's Liquor to call it quits

Posted: Updated:

A downtown Sioux Falls landmark is calling it quits.

For 67 years, Sid's Liquor has been a favorite place for many to shop.

But competition and changing times have made business difficult.

KSFY News caught up with owner Paul Damyan.

Paul took over the business from Sid, his father-in-law.

He kept Sid's Liquor going but it hasn't been easy.

Paul told us he's lost money the last five years, suffered huge losses last year and as he looked into the future, things didn't seem any brighter.

It will soon be closing time for Sid's Liquor, but this time, for good.

Owner Paul Damyan said "doesn't look like it will work for us anymore. and it's sad, we've been in Sioux Falls for 67 years."

Paul took over the business from Sid himself.

"My father-in-law loves Sioux Falls, he always sold Sioux Falls on me for a long time before I moved here to live with him. And I really like Sioux Falls but it's just something we have to do," Damyan said.

Customer Kim Heyder said "it makes me sad. They've been around a long time and I miss the personal one-on-one and carryout service that they're going to take with them when they close.

Customer Malorie Adamson said "initially, we were just shocked, you know.  It's been in business for so long, and he has a lot of patron customers and it's really sad to see a business go under like that."

"They're always really friendly, it's going to be very well missed," Heyder said.

"I've acquired quite a few real good friends here in Sioux Falls, I'll miss them a lot," Damyan said.

Paul plans to move to St. Louis to live with his wife, Sid's daughter.  It will be the first time he will be able to live with her full-time in ten years.

Sid's could close as early as next week.

He said he's running out of stock and once it's gone, it's gone.
