Students compete at USD Scripps Spelling Bee

Posted: Updated:

In Vermillion, Saturday, a group of students showed off their spelling skills at the 2014 University of South Dakota Scripps Spelling Bee.

Fifteen finalists between 2nd and 8th grade competed representing their own regions. The youngest competitor was just nine years old.

Two were left standing after 30 rounds. The winner, Antonio Lansang, of Brookings, will travel to Washington, D.C. to compete in the National Scripps Spelling Bee this May. He is an 8th grader at George S. Mickelson Middle School.

Adele Benoit, of Sacred Heart Middle School in Yankton, came in second place.

Congratulations to all of the participants!

KSFY's own Nancy Naeve sat in as guest celebrity 'word pronouncer' at the USD event.
