Tuition freeze for SD technical schools

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Tuition at South Dakota's four technical institutes will not increase next academic year but fees per credit hour will increase $4.

The state's Board of Education approved the fee increase Monday.

The facility fee will go up $3, while the maintenance and repair fee will increase $1. Factoring the fee hike, students will pay $137 per credit hour.

Melody Schopp is the state's secretary of education. She says it is important to keep technical education affordable because the state has a high demand for workers in areas such as engineering, information technology and manufacturing.

The department says more than 2,000 students graduated from the schools in 2013. Education officials say 87 percent of those students are employed.

The institutes are located in Watertown, Mitchell, Sioux Falls and Rapid City.
