Judge says woman who slapped child must apologize

Posted: Updated:

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A judge in Rapid City has ordered a woman who admitted slapping a 9-year-old child to write the child a letter of apology.

Twenty-nine-year-old Martha American Horse was accused of hitting the child last December and bruising the child's nose. The Rapid City Journal reports that American Horse pleaded guilty to simple assault and prosecutors dropped a felony child abuse charge.

Judge Wally Eklund sentenced her to serve a month in jail, take parenting classes and write the apology letter.
