Agreement between Mines, Ellsworth leads to refurbishing bombers

Posted: Updated:

The School of Mine's partnership with Ellsworth has already helped return four B-1s to service-- potentially saving the military millions of dollars. Now, there's a new agreement which renews that joint venture.

Thursday, both sides signed a formal agreement to collaborate on projects, such as using new research technology to refurbish aging bombers.

Researchers have developed a process that can deposit aluminum powder in worn parts of aircraft panels-- matching them to original dimensions.

Prior to this research, panels were nearly impossible to replace, as manufacturers no longer produced parts for the 30-year-old aircrafts.

With proper approvals, $2.5 million could be saved this year alone on the B-1s at Ellsworth.
