Murray County Medical Center faces difficulties

Posted: Updated:

Frustrations have been growing in the Minnesota town of Slayton over the direction it's county medical center seems to be headed.

KSFY News spoke to the Murray County Medical Center's chief financial officer to find out some of it's problems.

It's been a tough time for the Murray County Medical Center in Slayton, Minnesota.

And for patient Keith Weinzetl.

"I fell, on my arm a couple weeks back and it was just not getting any better," Weinzetl said.

Murray County Medical Center also is in the healing process after several doctors and it's CEO resigned this past year.

So how are the hospital's vital stats?

Murray County Medical Center CFO Renee Logan said "the hospital is in good financial shape. We have had a few months when we have had losses, due to lower volumes. There's just not as many patients as we've had previously."

"It is difficult. We obviously need to be creative in lowering costs and so on in the facility," Logan added.

An interim CEO has been hired to guide the hospital in the right direction. But the prescription to fix the MCMC may be difficult for some.

"Our biggest costs are our wages, salary... salaries and wages. So, not replacing people as they leave. We'll do it in areas where it's not going to affect the patients," Logan said.

Taking care of patients like Keith.

"I don't have to go to Sioux Falls, or Mankato for little things, major, minor things. So I just don't think I'd be happy if I had to go someplace else, period," Weinzetl said.
