South Dakota awards $2.1M in transportation grants

Posted: Updated:

The South Dakota Department of Transportation has awarded nearly $2.1 million in grants to 11 communities, counties and tribes.

Transportation officials say the grants are part of a program that aims at funding safe, alternative transportation options.

The largest award went to Meade County for sidewalks and related improvements to provide safe off-street pedestrian routes to the Black Hawk Elementary School. The department allocated more than $298,000 to that project.

The program gives out grants using federal transportation funds that have been designated by Congress. Local governments, school districts and tribal governments are among the groups that can apply for a grant.

Grant recipients are expected to provide $900,000 in local or in-kind matching donations.

A pedestrian pathway in Aurora County is also among the programs that will be funded.
