Golfers brave the chilly temps on opening day

Posted: Updated:

After a brutally cold winter, today was opening day for golf courses around Sioux Falls.

But it wasn't as ideal as golfers had hoped -- with chilly wind and snow still on the ground.

Even though there's still snow on the ground, golfers were itching to get outside today.

Too cold for golf? These guys didn't think so.

"Us diehards, we got to get out -- been itching all winter and finally the course opens and I don't think we're worried about bunkers now. It looks like snow banks now," said Joshua Cunningham, golfer.

"I couldn't beat the first day out. I was so happy to get out. Finally, it's a nice and sunny day. So the wind's a killer but it's the love of the sport. So you got to get out here and do what you got to do," said Jonathon Clayborne.

Like a kid in a candy store, golfers were raring to go.

"I've been practicing in a net this winter so I kind of loosened up. But it's nice to get out and actually see where the ball flies," said Tim Alick.

And the only birdies were those in the sky.

Bundled up, golfers were teeing off -- perfecting their swings.

"I layered up for today because the wind is just the biggest part and if it wasn't windy, it would be a beautiful day," said Clayborne.
