SD hopes to reach all veterans, fill service gaps

Posted: Updated:

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - National experts say a push in South Dakota to meet with all 75,000 veterans is part of a trend among states to compensate for gaps in federal efforts.

Bryan Craig with the National Center for Veterans Studies at the University of Utah says states have been working on veteran outreach programs for the past five or 10 years. He says veterans aren't always inclined to go out and seek services.

The state Veterans Affairs Department launched "Operation Reaching All Veterans" this January. Throughout the year, state, county and tribal staff will call every veteran in their records and host more than 130 open houses.

Officials say it's a good time to reach out to Vietnam veterans who may not have had a good homecoming and to others entitled to services.
