Thursday Avera St. Luke's in Aberdeen announced they will be adding a new cancer institute to their existing hospital.
It will be named "Coach Don and Carmen Meyer Center of Excellence." Don Meyer coached at Northern State University and was diagnosed with cancer in 2008.
The current cancer facility is cramped for space. It sees over 17,000 patient visits every year. Doctors say a new center is needed because with baby boomers entering Medicare ranks, cancer rates are expected to rise.
The new center will be added on the north side of the existing building.
Due to cold weather, a ground breaking has yet to be set, but they plan to start building this summer.
"It's certainly a need. If you look at the data, cancer certainly touches everyone, and it continues to have more and more cases come up on a daily basis," Avera St. Luke's Vice President Michael O'Keefe said.
