Weather closes Sioux Falls public schools

Posted: Updated:

Sioux Falls students got a bit of a break today because of this weather.

But when they left school an hour early nothing was happening.

The snow started about 5:00 PM, which is when the buses would be finishing up their routes.

But the forecast the Sioux Falls district got said that is when the storm would be at its worst.

Sioux Falls Public Schools were let out an hour early because of the weather.

Which irritated some parents, like April Wahle.

"The weather is not, I mean you look outside it doesn't look like it's coming, like anything is even coming," she said.

But Todd Vik with the Sioux Falls School District said they have to decide by 11 AM to let school out, and at that point, the National Weather Service said it didn't look good.

"We had a weather forecast that said between 3:00 and 5:00 the roads were going to get hazardous and the visibility even in the city is going to be very iffy at best," said Vik.

There are over 23,000 kids in the district, so he said they would rather play it safe than sorry.

"You have to take into account a lot of things and at the time we had to make the call the best info that we had said we shouldn't have school," he added.

Since there are so many kids in the district, the school tries to make the best decision for when to cancel school or let it out early.
