Child playing with lighter starts fire in Sioux Falls home

Posted: Updated:

A fire broke out in a Sioux Falls home, Sunday morning, around 10:40 a.m. on the 1900 block of South Menlo Avenue. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue confirms with KSFY a child was playing with a lighter in an upstairs closet which started the fire.

The initial report was there were people still inside the structure. Sioux Falls Fire arrived on scene to a two story home with smoke showing from the second story window. It was confirmed that all people were out of the home and the fire was knocked down within about 15 minutes. It was confined to an upstairs closet.

There were 20 firefighters on scene. The home was equipped with working smoke detectors. The American Red Cross was also on scene and provided assistance to the family living in the home.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue would like to remind residents to discuss a home escape plan with family members and ensure all matches and lighters are placed in a secure location.
