SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (APRIL 6, 2014) – The USF softball team notched their third series sweep on Sunday when they defeated Minnesota Duluth 7-3 and 3-2 at Sherman Park. Batting 0.293 in the doubleheader, the Cougars got solid outings on the mound from seniors Amanda Walters and Bailey Bouman who gave up a combined two earned runs in the twin bill.

The Bulldogs got on the board early when Megan Mullen hit a two-run shot to right field to put UMD up 2-0 in the top of the 1st.
Not looking to be outdone, the Cougars responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st inning. Things got rolling offensively for USF when Erin Scott crossed the plate on a Betsy Thomas line out. In the next at bat, Bailey Bouman sent the pitch through the right side of the field which allowed Shannon Daly to bring the Cougars even with the Bulldogs at two runs apiece.
The second inning provided more scoring for both teams as Amanda Walters walked Megan Mullen with the bases loaded which allowed Hailey Lundquist to score and put UMD up 3-2.
USF answered back again in the bottom of the second when an Erin Scott sacrifice fly gave Kellen Dewey room to score on the tag up and knot things up at three runs. Scott ended the day going 2-of-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Later in the inning a wild pitch gave Haley Keiser a window to take home to put the Cougars up for good.
Looking to add some insurance runs in sixth inning, the Cougars Hayley Keiser hit a single through the left side that brought home Kellen Dewey and Amanda Walters.
The win was credited to Amanda Walters (13-3) as she struck out 13 Bulldog batters while only allowing two earned runs in her seven innings pitched.
UMD's Megan Mullen was charged with the loss as she gave up five earned runs in just 1.2 innings pitched.
The Cougars scored their seven runs on eight hits while committing two errors.
USF 3, Minnesota Duluth 2
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead again when Jordan Rice hit a double to left field which was mishandled by the Cougars and allowed Sami Schnyder to score. Later in the inning an Ashley Lewis ground out gave Megan Mullen time to score and put Minnesota Duluth up by two runs.
A Betsy Thomas home run to centerfield in the first inning put the Cougars on the board and brought them within one run of UMD.
In the fourth inning, Shae Hoskins tied things up when she had a solo shot for the Cougars.
With the potential of extra innings on the horizon, the Cougars Kellen Dewey hit a single through the right side which gave Bailey Bouman enough time to slide into home plate and give USF a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 6th. Dewey ended the game by going a perfect 2-of-2 at the plate with one RBI.
The pressure was on Bailey Bouman in the top of the 7th with runners on second and third with two outs, but the senior pitcher handled the situation with ease as she struck out the Bulldogs Mariah Schultz to seal the victory for the Cougars.
Bouman picked up her fifth win of the season on the mound for the Cougars while striking out five Bulldog batters and giving up no earned runs in seven innings pitched. The Pipestone, Minn. native also had a solid game at the plate as she recorded hits in two of her three at bats.
Cayli Sadler was given the loss, giving up three earned runs in six innings pitched.
USF scored their three runs off of eight hits while committing three errors.
The Cougars will return to action on Monday, April 7 when they play host to St. Cloud State at Sherman Park with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 12 p.m.
