Sisseton-Wahpeton enters land buy-back program

Posted: Updated:

The Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribe has agreed to enter a land buy-back program administered by the U.S. Department of Interior.

The agreement announced Tuesday will provide the tribe resources to host outreach programs and solicit interest from landowners in an effort to consolidate so-called fractionated interests.

Land buy-back programs aim to help Native American tribes buy parcels of reservation land that have accumulated multiple owners.

The parcels that get sold through this agreement will be consolidated and held in trust for the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribe of the Lake Traverse Reservation.

The purchases are part of a lawsuit settlement over government mismanagement of Indian land royalties.

Allotting reservation land to individual tribal members, who passed it to heirs, was once a government method for assimilating American Indians. Some parcels have several owners.
