Sioux Falls region marks one year since devastating ice storm

Posted: Updated:

Millions of dollars. 100,000 tons of trees. Hours and hours without electricity – for thousands of people.

A devastating blast of winter weather hit most of eastern South Dakota a year ago today.

But calling it just a ‘winter' storm hardly seems appropriate – especially for those who experienced last April's ice storm.

A heavy layer of ice weighed down tree branches, bringing them crashing down on electric poles, cars, houses and pedestrians. Sioux Falls police and fire rescue crews responded to thousands of calls for power lines down, houses destroyed and fires sparked by live wires.

Damage to public and private property was estimated at more than $11 million dollars from the storm that dropped more than 26 inches of snow and left more than 160,000 without power.
