High hopes for new library in Aberdeen

Posted: Updated:

Aberdeen has hopes of getting a new library. "We've already purchased land, which according to library planners is one of the hardest things to accomplish," president of the library foundation, Troy McQuillen said.

In the past, Alexander Mitchell Library has had water damage issues in the basement. This made the children's room, once downstairs, come upstairs, leaving for a very crowded area.

"I come here with my kids, and I don't stay long because they are noisy, and kind of messy. I don't want to bother other patrons at the library," library board member Peter Ramey said.

Now the basement isn't used for much. They do hold computer classes there, but the area isn't very conducive for those either. "We don't have a lot of plug-ins, and the wireless gets kind of wonky sometimes down here, so it'd be nice if we had a room that had the internet capabilities we need," library technician, Haana Vander Vorst said.

Architects have provided some preliminary design options for a new library. The only details set in stone are that it will be one level covering 30,000 square feet."What I really want is a place where I can just come, especially in the winter time, and just be with my family somewhere other than our house," Ramey said.

If plans follow through, board members say they hope to break ground on the new facility by 2016.
