Child abuse awareness and prevention in South Dakota

Posted: Updated:

More than 3 million children become victim of abuse or neglect in the United States, every year.

April is National Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention month and in South Dakota, a number of services are offered for families and children to maintain safety at home.

In South Dakota, the Department of Social Services and Child Protective Services offers a variety of resources from taking your reports of abuse or neglect, helping families become better parents and work with the authorities to intervene when necessary.

"We rely on the community, professionals, anyone in the community to contact us when they have concerns. We won't be able to help children be safe or help families parent their children safely if we're not contacted. It's important those calls are made so we can intervene before something happens that requires a different type of intervention," Child Protective Services' Vicki Burger said.

"This is what we do. We want to raise awareness to the community and persons that children their help in protecting them and our citizens are here to assess those families. Anything from parenting to helping them reach services in the community. We need to help and support for people to be aware of child abuse and neglect," Burger said.
