Brandon Police Officers adding tasers to their belts

Posted: Updated:

In February, three Sioux Falls Police Officers were injured while trying to make an arrest.

The incident prompted the Brandon Police Department to take a closer look at tasers.

Over the next couple of weeks, Brandon Police Officers will go through training on how to properly use tasers.

The taser would be carried on the opposite of where police officers would carry their firearm. Its color is yellow so the public will know that it's not a deadly weapon.

Right now, Brandon Police Officers carry two non-deadly weapons on their belt -- a collapsible baton and pepper spray. In a couple weeks, officers will be carrying tasers in place of pepper spray.

"As you can see, there's only so much room on the belt. And when you add another piece of equipment to the belt, sometimes you have to take away something," said Brandon Police Chief David Kull.

Not too many people would choose to get tased and oftentimes the sight of the taser is enough.

"You can arc the taser without shooting it off and as a warning to the subject 'you need to calm down otherwise I'm going to tase you' and sometimes, from what I've heard, that has a calming effect on people and they'll  become more cooperative," said Chief Kull.

Chief Kull says this is just one more way of protecting themselves and the community.

"Even if he's engaged with someone that may not be armed with a gun or a knife or a club but he's defeating that officer -- sometimes around the country the only option that the officer has to protect themselves is his firearm. This just gives him another option," said Chief Kull.

There is a camera on the battery so if there were any question about misuse, it's all documented.

Sioux Falls Police Officers do not carry tasers. Officer Sam Clemens told us it is something the department is looking into.

Other departments in South Dakota that allow officers to carry tasers also include Pierre, Rapid City and Canton.
