Psychiatric exam ordered for Yankton murder suspect

Posted: Updated:

YANKTON -- A judge has ordered a psychiatric evaluation for a man accused of using a hammer to kill his uncle in Yankton.

Joshua Hudson is charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault and grand theft in the March 7 death of 46-year-old Todd Hudson. He could face life in prison if convicted on the murder charge.

The Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan reports that Hudson had previously told Judge Glen Eng that he did not want legal counsel and would represent himself. Eng appointed public defender Dan Fox to the case anyway.

Fox said Monday that Hudson remains uncooperative and asked that Eng order a psychiatric evaluation to determine if his client is competent to represent himself. Prosecutor Erich Johnke did not object.
